Georgia was in a fix when she called upon RFCS to help her out. Money is tight in her slightly chaotic household, 20 minutes out of Ballarat. She runs a small business and with her 17-year-old son, and is trying desperately to keep her head above water in challenging times.
Having left school, her son is now eligible for Youth Allowance. The problem is that the paperwork calls for a current statement of financial position from Georgia and up to date current tax returns. While Georgia is quite capable of completing her own returns online, her old computer evidently, was not. It had a bad habit of shutting down in the middle of things, erasing any unsaved work and making it impossible to complete forms. It was a frustrating set of events that put added pressure on her finances.
When Georgia rang the RFCS she didn’t quite know what to expect. Financial counsellor Leeanne Summers quickly assessed the situation and realised the importance of a fully functioning computer in this situation. It was not only important for tax returns and applications for assistance in the short term, but it was also a key tool in the running of a small business. Through the Community Support Fund the RFCS service managed to find a refurbished machine that would suit Georgia’s needs perfectly.
Financial counsellor Erica McArthur and Wellbeing counsellor Catherine Poussard presented the computer to a very grateful Georgia at the Ballarat library. “This is perfect”, she said when the machine was set up and tested. “I don’t have a lot of space in my house, but this will fit nicely. Having a reliable computer is going to be a real turning point for our household. It will mean money through the door and together with the assistance from Leeanne and Erica, a positive step forward for us.”
RFCS is a registered charity and so the donation of this computer to Georgia fitted nicely into the Community Support Fund that the organisation is in the process of setting up. CEO David Stafford is excited by the development, “Georgia’s case not only highlights the purpose of the Community Support Fund, but also the impact it can have on people’s lives. The Community Support Fund can provide relief to those rural people in need, and for the communities they live in. We continue to support our regions to be sustainable and strong.”
Meanwhile, Georgia’s counsellors are looking forward to a turnaround in Georgia’s fortunes, and with some ongoing financial guidance, a bright future ahead.
